Awakening 2000 will challenge people of all faiths to grow spiritually.
Regardless of our diverse faith traditions, there is a consensus that human dignity comes from God and is worthy of our utmost respect, and this consensus must be celebrated. Awakening 2000 seeks to build a better Florida, one heart and soul at a time.
The passage from one millennium to another, which takes place on January 1, 2000, comes at a time when America seems to be spiritually and morally asleep. It seems our capacity to distinguish right from wrong has waned, and our respect for human dignity has been called into question.
In an effort to refocus our attention on the image of God in every man, woman, and child, and to promote an improved quality of life for all, the Awakening 2000 campaign was launched. This two-year interfaith effort has won the support of Florida's top religious, business, and government leaders, and has received national attention.
Through a "commitment card" campaign, Awakening 2000 will ask Floridians to build a better Florida by personally and sincerely committing to do the following during 1999 and 2000:
- PRAY each day
- FORGIVE others, and seek to be forgiven when we fail God and others
- RENEW FAMILY relationships, particularly with family members who are difficult to love or forgive
- RESPECT LIFE and confront death
- HONOR ELDERS and promote civility in our all our dealings
- REACH OUT to those most in need, particularly those who are unloved and unwanted
- SMILE as a simple means of spreading peace
- SACRIFICE make some daily sacrifice as a sign of this commitment and as an offering to God
Awakening 2000 will include:
- A statewide grassroots initiative seeking individual commitments through the "commitment card" campaign. Working with churches, synagogues and other organizations, Aging with Dignity hopes to obtain a million commitments before December 31, 2000. Click here to make your commitment!
- A Summit of Faith gathering which will bring together Florida’s religious, business and civic leadership to reflect on the importance of spiritual renewal as we enter the 21st century, to be held in the fall, 1999.
- A two-year dedicated effort by Aging with Dignity to advocate for the needs of those whose right to age with dignity is imperiled, with a special emphasis on the plight of the lonely and those near death.
Awakening 2000 looks to God, not government, as the source of all hope, and believes that a new and better Florida is awaiting us in the next millennium.
